Eugene wanted fish for supper
but on his trip to the market
he encountered a blind woman
who held out a cup asking alms
weighed with a longing for trout
on the one hand
and a consciencious duty
to assist a fellow human
on the other
eugene thumbed the coin in his pocket
only to find he d inherited a hole in the fabric and no coin
apparently his moral compass had fallen thru as well
leaving eugene with little sense of direction for
on impulse
he reached into the cup and withdrew enough for the carp
bolting away as the miser made a swipe at him with her cane
- returning with the fish under his arm
eugene was pointed out by the vagrant lady
to a cop patrolling the beat
as the man who d assaulted her
and stolen from her till
so eugene engaged him in a footchase
what ended in his getting pummelled unconscious
with a billy club
and dragged away to the city jail
where he was made somebody s b*tch
and later hanged himself with a bedsheet
while the homeless blind woman
placed the frozen fish atop her shopping cart
and stooped to pick up a shiny coin on the pavement
a scene repeated numerous times
as she ambled down the walk
returning to her luxury apartment
where she shed her wrags and prepared the fish
- after a hearty meal she changed into gym shorts
and jogged downtown past the city precinct
where some poor sap was being hauled out on a stretcher
by detached paramedics who paused in their duties
to smile at the shapely brunette as she jiggled past

all eugene wanted was fish for his supper
