To Elaine

George Lewis Avery

T'is hard, they say, for one to speak
Of topics where one's feelings leak
To unearth etchings beneath the stone
That show one is more than flesh and bone
But I have a pen and a poet's curse
And oft' attempt these things in verse

Sis, could I compare you to a summer's day
Why yes, but in my own transparent way

On a branch, all a'twitter
Sits a songbird, quite a'flitter
With it's minstrel voice a'rising
As the sun is slowly rising
Perched upon a lofty pine bough
Pouring forth it's lovely song so
That the world might rise and shine
As the sun will surely shine
On the branch, all a'twitter
Sit's the songbird, quite a'flitter
Shining forth with all it's muster
As the sun sends forth it's luster
Preening forth, the lovely bard sings
Dripping notes from silver heart-strings
That the world might surely shine
As the sun is sure to shine
Soul and Heart are gladly list'ning
To the silver throat a whist'ling
Blood and pulse are gently thrumming
Mind at ease is softly humming
Dewdrops glisten on the leeward
Posies knod upon the seaward
Idle clouds show silver lining
And all about, the Sun is shining
For all the world has ris' to shine
Upon that minstrel in the pine

Now other days may come to be
Wherewith the wind ascends the tree
Swirling devils sting at the eye
Low sprinting clouds bestreak the sky
Cold slashing rains onslaught the soil
Beseeching streams to rise and boil
Quite easily it might be said
"The sun has surely gone to bed."
And moaning winds arise to say
"Despair! Despair! We're here to stay!"
And yet, before the dying thunder
Leaves the leaves a dripping under
And shallow pools of water settle
Beneath the primrose and the nettle
Comes one among the Katydid
Who barefoots through the dew
A Happy Lark, a Mockingbird
Who brings me in mind of you
And all the world begins to shine
Just as the sun will surely shine

And I am thankful for each shared minute
Of each past day when you've been in it
For you, my Sis, I hold quite dear
Your zesty presence brings me cheer
How do I say this with proper tact
"I Love You, Sis." And that's a fact!
