To Mamie Gail

George Lewis Avery

Tonight As I gaze out on the stars
And acknowledge the wonderful things there are
To fill this vast and wondrous space
From cosmic dust to the Milky Way
There suddenly dawns a gloomy thought
That leaves me shaken and distraught
How precious few my memories would be
Had you not been a sibling along with me

Your soul burns with so blue a flame
The warmth is felt when I speak your name
Your selfless nature knows no bounds
And within my heart, your laughter sounds
There exists no blade with a finer edge
Nor parchment sealed with a truer pledge
For long, long ago in the Days Of Old
King Midas surely owned the mold
Wherin God placed your shapely clay
As He filled your soul with the Sun's bright ray

You glow so warmly on this world so wide
That Springtime follows at your side
The seas grow calm, the skies turn blue
And I am a better person because of you
